It’s the last Friday of the month and the end of the first month of the year and what better way to finish the month out then by featuring yet another Ambitious Woman whose passionate about Women Empowerment and development. Five years ago, Darnisha Davenport was was hit with a life changing event. She moved from Milwaukee, WI to a state where she knew no one, to attend college and further her career. It was then that she decided to go natural in 2012, while attending college in in Detroit, MI.
AM: I’m so very glad that you were able to take the time to do this interview. Why don’t you introduce yourself to my readers?
Nisha: I am currently the owner and founder of the iKURLY Natural Hair & Beard Care product line.
AM: How did you come about doing what you do now and when was the passion for it born?
Nisha: I struggled with finding the right product for my hair type when I decided to return to natural. This is when I began mixing different organic ingredients in my mom’s kitchen to create a natural hair product that works. I started making my own product in 2012 for myself to use during my natural hair journey. Some people at school saw my results in growth and the difference my product made, and that inspired me to go into business with it. My passion has obviously always been “hair”. I say that because I didn’t see the hair industry as my career, I wanted to be a Pediatrician. I used to braid hair in middle school, and in high school. I literally turned my parent’s home into a salon (lol) having students from my school (Riverside University) come by for scheduled appointments to get their hair braided, both boys and girls. Hair was my thing, but I never had a focus on it until now. It has always been my gift, I just needed to find a way of implementing it, and over time it came to me. I grew my own hair without any help using my own product. This is genuinely my passion.
AM: What are your plans going forward with iKurly?
Nisha: My plans are to be a brand internationally known. I want to help women and men of all ages embrace their natural with less. I want to inspire the natural hair community through iKURLY multi-benefit product, while teaching young girls and women the importance of embracing their natural hair and helping build confidence. It is my goal to not only motivate in that area, but in education, love, and a healthy life. For this to be a product with multiple benefits, iKURLY can truly help a community. There are so many people in our community that have been touched by my business. Since a year ago, many customers love their results they received from using my product, whether it’s long lasting moisture leaving the hair soft and hydrated, growth, curl definition, shine, or smooth edges. iKURLY was designed to make a positive impact on society, and we will continue making an impact through our product.
AM: What does women empowerment mean to you?
Nisha: Women empowerment means EVERYTHING to me. To increase the spiritual, social and economic strength of women in our communities is the ultimate mission. Also, developing and boosting confidence in individuals, as well as my sisters in their own capacities. Marginalizing power in women and girls so that they can play a significant role in the society!
AM: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Nisha:In five years, I see myself married with a family, and pursuing my passion while traveling the world motivational speaking to all races of life building confidence and inspiring through iKURLY to everyone, teaching those the greatness of embracing what God has blessed them with. The goal is to have many different platforms offering iKURLY in more ways than just a product to make a positive impact.
AM: Name something that you’ve always wanted to do
Nisha: I have always wanted to own my own business, but most importantly, I have always wanted to inspire. I aspire to inspire.
